SPC Alumni Awarded Pritzker Research Fellowship
St. Petersburg Collegiate High School alumni Amy Rice ’09 was recently awarded the prestigious Pritzker Research Fellowship in the Ph.D. program in Physics at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago. The Fellowship pays tuition, stipend and research funds totaling more than $200,000 over the four-year term of the award.
After earning an Associate degree from SPC in 2009, Rice transferred to IIT where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics. “Biology was my first love,” said Rice. “It’s what got me interested in science in the first place.”
Born and raised in St. Petersburg, Rice was homeschooled through eighth grade. In ninth grade she attended Veritas Academy and transferred to SPC’s Collegiate High School for grades 10-12.

Amanda Cummings, B.S. in Business Administration. “Because of St. Petersburg College I now have the opportunity to go wherever it is I want to go.”

Craig Corlis, A.S. in Web Design. Corlis obtained a B.A. in Computer Science from McDaniel College in 2015. Since graduating, Corlis has been working as a Developer/Analyst for the City of Pittsburgh Housing Authority. He is getting married next March in St. Petersburg.
Brandon Fong, A.A. Fong obtained a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of South Florida and will be attending Morehouse School of Medicine in July.
Andrew Lawrence, B.S., in Business Administration. Lawrence graduated from the University of Florida with a Masters of Business Administration, one of only 60 students admitted to the one-year accelerated M.B.A. program in 2014. “Andrew was an outstanding student of mine,” said Dr. Robin Wilber, SPC Professor of Finance. “I am very proud of him, but not surprised by his accomplishments.” Lawrence recently secured a job as a Business Operations Analyst in Oldsmar, Florida.

Deniann Grant, A.A. in Communications. Grant was recently chosen as a finalist for the prestigious Teach for America Sue Lehmann Teaching and Learning fellowship. After SPC, Grant obtained a B.A. in English and History from the University of Florida. “Because I had people believe in me at SPC, I was always involved in leadership training,” she said. “When I think about my identity and how I interact with people and other professionals, I realize that I learned the gist of that at SPC.”
Linda Meier, AA in General Studies, Linda graduated with a BA in Mass Communications from the University of South Florida. She is now the owner of Linda Meier PR, a public relations company that focuses on giving small businesses the opportunity to establish a social media presence, attract new customers and maintain customer loyalty through strategic promotions.
Lauren Weber, A.A. (2010), continued her education at St. Petersburg College, earning a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Organizational Leadership (2012). She is working as a paralegal and plans to attend Stetson University to earn her J.D.

Tyler M. Heston, A.A. in Education. Tyler received his PhD from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Linguistics at the age of 21. He says this success was made possible by the Dual Enrollment program at SPC.
Jeffrey Tyler, Cisco Networking Certificate. Tyler graduated from Penn State Altoona in 1995, earning his associate’s degree in engineering technology. He has held various positions in the field of communications technology. Tyler’s latest venture is patent-pending technology that seeks to bring high speed internet to all Americans.

George Bessler, BAS in Public Safety Administration, is employed as Assistant Fire Chief for East Lake Fire Rescue. Previously, he served as Fire Chief for the City of Seminole Fire Rescue for over thirty years.

Anastasia Smith, A.A., went on to earn a B.A.S. degree in Technology Management at St. Petersburg College, as well as M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from the University of South Florida.

Stephanie Wyatt, A.A. and A.S. in Sign Language Interpretation. Wyatt has been a sign language interpreter for SPC since 2005 and obtained a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences from the University of South Florida in 2013. Wyatt has interpreted for many interesting and famous people including R.L Stine, Billy Joel, and President Barack Obama when he visited the Seminole campus.

Dr. Angela Eward-Mangione, A.A. After graduating from SPC, Eward-Mangione completed her B.A., M.L.A. and Ph.D. at the University of South Florida. She was awarded the Julian and Harry Newman Award for Academic Promise and the 2016 Aaron Swartz Best Webtext Award. She is currently in a tenure-track position in the English Department at Hillsborough Community College.

Paul Wilder, A.A., earned a B.S. degree in Information Systems Management from the University of South Florida in 2002. He serves as the Director of Information Technology for Kelby Media Group in Oldsmar.

Jan DeGraw-Higgins, A.S., in Veterinary Technology, is actively volunteering as a puppy raiser for Southeastern Guide Dogs. Her passion is puppy raising and she has a solid love for dogs.

Duane Daiker, A.A. After graduating from SPC, Daiker attended the University of Florida for both his undergraduate and law degrees. Daiker is now a Legal-Studies Adjunct Professor at SPC. He is also a partner in the Tampa Law Firm of Shumaker, Loop and Kendrick, LLP and was elected as Chair of the Appellate Practice Section of The Florida Bar this year.

Ken Donaldson, A.A. and A.S. in Human Services. Donaldson just celebrated his 25th year in private practice and 10 year anniversary of the release of his first book, Marry Yourself First! He works with executive teams in developing a more emotionally intelligent workplace.

Leonard Phillips, A.A., went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Central Florida in 1980.
Mark Reithmaier, AA in Business Administration and Management, went on to receive a BA in Finance from the University of South Florida’s College of Business. He is the Senior Accountant at Suncoast Digital Technology, where he has worked for fifteen years.

D. Lynn Jackson, A.A. After graduating from SPC, Jackson obtained a B.S. in Social Work from the University of South Florida and a Master’s and Ph.D. in Social Work from Florida State University. She currently is Associate Professor/ Director of Field Education at Texas Christian University.

Stephen Montague, A.A. in Music. Montague is a freelance composer and conductor living in London since 1974. He is the Artistic Director for a large, multi-media event in France at Centre Pompidou-Metz. He is also working on a commission for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, UK.
