Departmental Awards recognize exceptional students who meet the specific criteria of each award. Each award recipient selection process is different. Please read the descriptions below for more information.
Applied Ethics Award – Applicants must be currently enrolled in an SPC Applied Ethics Institute course. Contact the Applied Ethics Institute at 727-341-4335.
Apollo/Alumni Achievement Awards – The Alumni Association will present a plaque and a monetary award to an outstanding graduating sophomore and baccalaureate graduate excelling in scholastics, leadership ability and student activities. Contact the Foundation Office.
Bob Bohan Award – Established in memory of Bob Bohan, who taught speech and communication at the St. Petersburg/ Gibbs campus for more than 42 years. This award is given at the end of the Spring Term to the most outstanding speech student at the SPG campus.
Burt Mathematics Award – The Burt Mathematics Award recognizes an outstanding student in the field of Mathematics at the St. Petersburg Gibbs campus.
Carolyn Parker Memorial English Award – An award will be presented to an English major graduate from the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus. The award will be based on overall academic achievement, creative performance and contributions to English activities. Contact Albert Farr.
Cele Herring Math Scholarship – Established to promote and perpetuate the memory of Cele Herring – an SPC student, a loyal and dedicated volunteer in the SPC math department, and a working nurse in Pinellas County for 60 years. The award will provide scholarships to students in need of financial assistance who are enrolled in a mathematics program and attending classes full, or part time at any SPC campus. These scholarships are per year and may be used for tuition, books, fees or other miscellaneous college expenses. Clearwater Faculty Governance Grant – Applicants must have designated the Clearwater Campus of St. Petersburg College as their home campus and submit a recommendation from a faculty member who is willing to serve as a mentor throughout the period of the scholarship award. Each award will be reviewed and awarded by the Clearwater Faculty Governance Organization. Preference will be given to those with the ability to demonstrate financial need.
Clearwater Campus Mathematics Department/Natural Science Award – The Clearwater Campus Mathematics Department/Natural Science Award recognizes an outstanding student in the field of Mathematics or Natural Science on the Clearwater campus.
Clearwater Provost Student Recognition Award – The Clearwater Provost’s Student Recognition Award recognizes an outstanding student on the Clearwater campus.
District Chief Frank Spirek Memorial Award – This scholarship was established in tribute to the life of District Chief Frank Spirek. Recipients must be attending the fire academy at St. Petersburg College and show high academic performance and/or high achievement in a skill area.
Donald and Helen Gilbart Award for Excellence – This award was established to recognize outstanding students on the Clearwater Campus; Tutor of the Year; First Year and Second Year Honors Student of the Year, and Women on the Way Outstanding Student.
Dr. Theodore J. Mazzu – The Dr. Theodore J. Mazzu Scholarship Award recognizes the most outstanding student on the Clearwater campus.
Edna Allwurden Andrews Memorial Mathematics Award – Established by her daughter, Bunny Andrews Schroeer, son-in-law Dietrich Schroeer and two grandchildren Karsten and Alison Schroeer, to honor the memory of Mrs. Edna Allwurden Andrews – an alumna of SPC and Pinellas County teacher for 32 years. The mathematics faculty will nominate and select the recipients for the scholarships of varied amounts. Contact Jimmy Chang.
Elser Fund for Interpreting Scholarships – The Elser Interpreting Award recognizes a outstanding students in the field of Sign Language Interpretation at the Clearwater campus.
Gen. Bill Klein, Colonel Ed Walsh American Government Award – This award was established to recognize the highest achieving student in the American Government (POS 2041) course at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus. This award is given during the Spring Term.
Hospitality and Tourism Award – This award was established to recognize outstanding Hospitality and Tourism students. Contact Sandy DeCarlo.
Lily and Isaac Varon TIA and TIO Award – This award was established in honor of an outstanding international student from South America. Recipients must be a native to South America, have minimum GPA of 3.0, and completed 12 credit hours at SPC. Recipients must also have demonstrated financial need.
John and Nina Sanders & Merlin L. DeGuire, Jr. O&P Achievement Award – Established to assist students enrolled at SPC. Recipients must be a full-time student, working towards a Baccalaureate Degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics.
Joseph W. Howland Mathematics Award – An award will be presented to a Clearwater Campus student who has successfully completed at least one developmental math course and succeeded in college-level course work. Recipient must have an overall 3.0 GPA and must be recommended by the mathematics faculty. Contact Jimmy Chang.
Learning Support Center – The Learning Support Center Achievement Award recognizes outstanding students associated with the Learning Support Center on the Clearwater campus.
Mary Rowena Perrin Humanities Award – An award will be presented to a Humanities/Fine Arts major graduate from the Clearwater Campus. The award will be based on academic achievement along with strong interest in Humanities. Contact Mark Hunter.
Mathematics Award – An award will be presented to a freshman or sophomore majoring in mathematics and registered at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus. Recipient should have an interest in teaching mathematics. Contact Jimmy Chang.
NACFE Award – An award will be presented to a student currently enrolled in an SPC Applied Ethics Institute course. Contact the Applied Ethics Institute at 727-341-4335.
Raymond Johns Award for Excellence – The purpose of the Raymond Johns Award for Excellence is to honor the memory of Raymond Johns, alumnus of the SPC Fire Academy, by providing financial assistance and academic incentive for the student with the highest GPA and performance rating from the Fire Academy each year. The fund is intended to encourage students to complete the Fire Academy program and strive for academic excellence.
Scott Walling Speech Award – An award will be presented to a Clearwater Campus student excelling in Speech. The award will be based on grades and excellence in public speaking along with a strong interest in continuing these skills. Contact Bonnie Jefferis.
Sealund & Associates Award – An award offered to exceptional new digital media student on the Seminole Campus.
Seminole Campus Eagle Award – Available to a full-time, rising sophomore (over 30 credit hours) SPC student attending the Seminole Campus and/or eCampus in the previous fall or spring. Student must have a 3.0 or better GPA and demonstrate leadership and service to the Seminole Campus.
Seminole Chamber of Commerce – Established to assist students who reside in the greater Seminole area, attend SPC Seminole campus, are pursuing careers in business and have a GPA of 2.5 or above.
Shrider Mathematics Award – An award offered to a freshman or sophomore majoring in mathematics and registered at the Clearwater Campus. Recipient should plan to teach mathematics. Contact Bill Hemme.
St. Petersburg College M. M. Bennett Libraries – Recipients of the St. Petersburg College M.M. Bennett Libraries Scholarship must be a student in good standing and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to library student workers.
The George F. Hieber, II Scholarship for Excellence in College Preparatory Mathematics – Established to honor George F. Hieber, II – instructor of developmental mathematics on the Clearwater Campus for nine years. The award will honor a Clearwater Campus student who has demonstrated excellence in college preparatory mathematics. Contact Bill Hemme at the Clearwater Campus Mathematics Program Office.
Virginia E. Follin English Award – The Communications Program is offering a $100 award to an English major graduate from the Clearwater Campus. The award will be based on ability, leadership and financial need.
William Alborg Memorial Award – This award was established for a student in the Communications program. Contact Albert Farr.
William Ketchum Memorial Award – Established in memory of a former SPC instructor. The award will be presented to a St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus mathematics student. Contact Jimmy Chang.
William R. Rice Mathematics Award – Established in memory of William R. Rice – mathematics professor for 33 years at SPC. The mathematics faculty committee will select recipients for the various awards among deserving mathematics students. Contact Jimmy Chang.
Yvonne Ulmer Academic Challenge Scholarship – The award will be based on overall academic achievement, participation in out-of-classroom support (tutoring center) and contributions to the Downtown campus.
